Humana Foundation Quarterly Newsletter
A Word From Our CEO
As we reflect on the second quarter of 2025, I am filled with gratitude and pride for the incredible work our team and partners have accomplished together. At the Humana Foundation, our commitment to advancing health equity remains unwavering—and this past quarter has been a powerful reminder of the impact we can make when we lead with compassion, collaboration, and purpose.
This spring, we responded swiftly to the devastating tornadoes that swept through Kentucky, providing $50,000 in immediate relief to support recovery efforts in the hardest-hit communities.
Our dedication to Kentucky is enduring and instinctive, especially in times of crisis. These moments of hardship underscore why our mission matters—and why we must continue to stand with communities when they need us most.
We also celebrated a record-breaking Double Match Day, where more than 5,000 Humana and CenterWell employees contributed to causes close to their hearts, resulting in $1.5 million in donations to nonprofits. It’s a testament to the power of collective generosity and the spirit of service that defines our organization.
In this issue, you’ll read about our continued investment in equitable research practices, highlighted in our first-ever report, “Strengthening Science and Community Impact Through Equitable Research Practice.”
You’ll also learn about our growing partnership with OATS by AARP, our support for expanded mental health services in Louisville, andtakeawaysfrom our recent team strategy session in San Antonio.
I’m also humbled to share that I was named to the inaugural TIME100 Philanthropy list and honored with the AMPED Dream Maker Award.
These recognitions reflect the tireless work of our team and partners who are driving meaningful change every day.
Finally, we launched our new Foundation podcast to bring Humana employees closer to the stories, voices, and impact behind our work.
This new platform allows us to amplify community voices, highlight innovative solutions, and celebrate the people behind the progress. We’ll share these voices and impact with all ofour stakeholders, and I encourage you to tune in and hear directly from the people making a difference.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are building healthier, more resilient communities—and I can’t wait to see what we accomplish next.
Record-Setting Double Match Day
DayThe Humana Foundation offers Humana and CenterWell employees the opportunity to receive a double match for donations to eligible nonprofits during the annual “Double Match Day” initiative.
Humana and CenterWell employees set Double Match Day records this year with more than 2,000 employees participating in the event for a combined total of $1.57 million donated to nonprofits.
The Humana Foundation also awarded employees two $10,000 grants and one grand prize $25,000 grant for donation to nonprofits during this year’s Double Match Day.
Strengthening Science and Community Impact Through Equitable Research
Recently, the Humana Foundation published its first report titled, "Strengthening Science and Community Impact Through Equitable Research Practice," authored by Humana Foundation team members Heather Hyden and Soojin Conover.
In the report, we highlight how research partners are using innovative, equitable practices that reflect three key themes:
- Expanding access and opportunity by designing culturally responsive studies and partnering with trusted local institutions like schools and churches.
- Promoting community leadership by involving local voices in shaping research through advisory boards and collaborative planning.
- Respecting human dignity by ensuring participant safety, fair compensation, and reducing stigma around study participation.
The aim of these practices is to help build stronger relationships between researchers and communities, leading to more impactful and sustainable health solutions. In a call to action, we encourage funders to:
- Prioritize health equity by supporting research that uses innovative, community-engaged methods to reach underserved and diverse populations.
- Adopt flexible funding models that give researchers the resources and adaptability needed to respond to evolving community health needs.

Humana Foundation Board of Directors Visits Miami Senior Planet
The Humana Foundation team visited “Miami Senior Planet,” a community center for seniors operated by Foundation partner Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) by AARP, during a team huddle in 2024. After an inspiring day helping seniors learn about and navigate technology, the Foundation team invited its board of directors for a site visit to Miami Senior Planet to experience hands-on the impact of the Humana Foundation’s grant with our partner OATS.
“We’re thrilled to bring our board here to Senior Planet by OATS in Miami, and the most exciting thing for us is that we have stayed committed to OATS,” Humana Foundation CEO Tiffany Benjamin said. “We saw the doors open and this year we came back; And what we see is a place filled with love and light and joy and people learning about technology and really improving their own lives.”
Senior Planet is the Miami-area’s first technology-themed community center for older adults where visitors can receive assistance with technology and learn new skills in a spacious, modern center. The Humana Foundation’s partnership with OATS extends through 2027.
“There are a lot of people (at the facility); the whole room was filled with seniors having lunch, waiting for class,” Chairman of the Humana Foundation’s Board of Directors David Jones said. “People come not only for education about how to use technology, not only to make their lives better, but also it’s become a social hub.”

Partner Highlight: Greater Louisville Inc.
BACKGROUND: Greater Louisville Inc. (GLI) is a metro chamber of commerce for the Louisville region, working to grow the regional economy and improve quality of life through partnerships, policy and investment.
THE NEWS: The Humana Foundation partnered with GLI to fund expanded access to mental health services across Louisville in response to the tragic shooting in April 2023 at Old National Bank. Six local mental health organizations received funding to add staff, improve outreach and extend care options. In the first year, the initiative connected more than 4,500 people to mental health services.
WHY IT MATTERS:
- The grants helped providers hire 31 new mental health professionals and extend care to underserved populations. Funding also helped establish or expand 25 partnerships with local nonprofits, education institutions and community organizations.
- ·Community partners reported reduced wait time, increased service capacity and greater access to culturally responsive care.
WHAT’S NEXT: GLI and its partners will use data from this first year to explore long-term models that expand mental health access. Additional funding partners have joined the effort, and future phases may scale the initiative across Kentucky.

Team Strategy Session: Reflection, Alignment and Action
The Humana Foundation team gathered earlier this year in San Antonio for a multi-day strategy huddle focused on reflection, alignment and action. The sessions gave us dedicated time to align our efforts, reconnect with our mission and engage in meaningful conversations about the impact of our work.
One of the most impactful moments from the huddle was a team session where we each shared our personal “why” for doing this work. The powerful discussion deepened our connection as a team and offered insight into the passions and motivations that drive our commitment to advancing health equity in mental and nutritional health for seniors, veterans and school-aged children.
We also visited our partners at USAA. USAA created the Face the Fight initiative, which is a coalition focused on reducing veteran suicide. While at USAA’s headquarters, we met with members of their leadership and several veterans on their team who help lead their workforce. These conversations gave us a richer understanding of the needs, challenges and strengths within the veteran community.
Our team capped the trip with a hands-on volunteer opportunity at the San Antonio Food Bank. After touring the facility and learning more about their efforts to combat food insecurity, we rolled up our sleeves to help sort food donations for distribution to families across the region.
We left San Antonio recharged and ready to serve!
