San Antonio Foodbank

BACKGROUND:

The San Antonio Food Bank combats hunger in southwest Texas by providing immediate food aid and resources for future self-sustainability.

THE NEWS:

Over the past five years, the Humana Foundation has granted $2.3 million to the San Antonio Food Bank, aiding their efforts in battling food insecurity among seniors. In 2022, these funds were used to extend the senior grocery program to an additional 44 locations and assist more than 3,700 seniors in enrolling in the Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

WHY IT MATTERS:

  • The senior grocery program supports more than 5,000 seniors, the majority of whom are ethnic minorities, residing alone in high-risk and marginalized areas of San Antonio.

  • The San Antonio Food Bank enhanced its networks commitment to adversity, equity and inclusion by cultivating culturally responsive practices across partner food pantries. This allowed the organization to better serve the diverse communities in the San Antonio area.

IMPACT AREAS:

This program addressed the Humana Foundation’s focus area of shaping a healthier approach to nutrition by expanding the Senior Grocery Program to provide reliable access to nutritious foods for seniors in diverse and underserved populations.

WHAT’S NEXT:

San Antonio Food Bank aims to upscale operations to meet growing demand, enhance food quality, expand data analysis capabilities and bolster partner engagement. To ensure continued alignment with community needs of food, their staff regularly participates in community meetings and conducts strategic self-evaluations.
