History and impact

Humana co-founders David A. Jones and Wendell Cherry established the Humana Foundation in 1981 as the philanthropic arm of the company. Their long-standing commitment to Humana’s philanthropy over the years resulted in transformational changes, especially in the areas of education, healthcare, and the arts.

Today, Humana’s leadership is equally committed to giving back and supporting worthwhile efforts that enhance the health and well-being of communities throughout the country.

  • Since 1975, Humana and the Humana Foundation’s support of community partners has totaled $286 million.1
  • In 2016, nonprofit organizations received over $4.8 million in health-related grants from the Humana Foundation.2
  • The Humana Foundation funds programming serving underserved communities. In 2016, $2.9 million in funding was directed to programs targeting minority populations.3
  • The Humana Foundation scholarship program has provided more than $14.2 million in college scholarships to children of Humana associates.4
