The Humana Foundation recently elected Dr. Bettina M. Beech, University of Houston (UH) Associate Provost for Planning and Strategic Initiatives, to its Board of Directors.

Dr. Beech also serves as the Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences at the UH College of Medicine. Passionate about research, Dr. Beech has an interdisciplinary background in public health, population health, health disparities, type 2 diabetes, cancer prevention and control, and pediatric and adolescent health issues.

“As The Humana Foundation continues its mission of creating greater health for all, we welcome the deep expertise in social determinants of health Dr. Beech will bring to the Board,” said Bruce Broussard, Chairman of The Humana Foundation Board of Directors. “Adding more voices to the Foundation Board who are actively working to address barriers to health strengthens our ability to create sustainable, positive health outcomes in local communities. We are especially excited that Dr. Beech is a member of the University of Houston staff, deepening the population health partnership and connection between the College of Medicine, Humana and the Foundation.”

Humana partners with the University of Houston to train future clinicians about holistic health and ways to address social determinants of health. The Humana Integrated Health System Sciences Institute at the University of Houston unites the colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work and Optometry with the university’s College of Medicine to provide future healthcare leaders with training on holistic, collaborative care that improves health outcomes. The Humana Institute prepares future healthcare professionals who are skilled in community health and have a propensity for working with underserved populations.

Dr. Beech completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer prevention and control from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, a Doctor of Public Health in community health sciences from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and a Master of Public Health and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Temple University.

The Foundation’s Board of Directors helps guide strategy and policy for the Foundation, often referred to as the enterprise’s philanthropic arm. Dr. Beech’s election brings the Foundation’s Board to five members, including:
