The Humana Foundation, philanthropic arm of Humana Inc., today announced $200,000 in support for communities in Texas and Louisiana affected by Hurricane Laura. This support will be split between Americares and Feeding America and will address health and food security needs for communities dealing with the impact of both the hurricane and the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis.

“Hurricane Laura left widespread destruction across the Gulf Coast, tearing apart homes and businesses, knocking out electricity and water systems for thousands of people during record-breaking heat, and adding additional complexities to the fight against coronavirus,” said Walter D. Woods, CEO of The Humana Foundation. “Many are struggling with health and food security needs in the wake of the storm, while local health systems are already stressed by COVID-19 and concerns for a potential spike in illnesses. The Humana Foundation’s support will address health and food needs, supporting those who most need assistance while facing extraordinary challenges.”

Americares, a health-focused relief and developmental organization that improves health for people affected by poverty or disaster, will receive $100,000 for its Hurricane Laura disaster relief fund. More than 80 partners in Texas and Louisiana will receive support from this fund, providing communities with:

  • Relief supplies, including medicines, hygiene and medical supplies, and PPE
  • Operational support for health centers facing sustained power outages and/or damaged in the storm
  • Training and technical assistance, including mental health support and COVID-19 prevention and control

Feeding America, the largest domestic hunger-relief organization in the U.S., will also receive $100,000 for its Hurricane Laura disaster relief fund. Partnering Gulf Coast member food banks are providing thousands of meals per day to people displaced by the storm, deploying disaster boxes of food, water and emergency supplies. Funds from Feeding America’s Hurricane Laura disaster relief fund will support these efforts, as well as post-disaster coordination efforts to continue addressing hunger and food distribution as communities recover and rebuild.

To join The Humana Foundation and support communities in Texas and Louisiana affected by Hurricane Laura, consider donating funds to Feeding America’s Hurricane Laura Response Fund or financially supporting deliveries of medical supplies and critical aid.
