Contributions to Arts and Culture

Actors Theatre of Louisville's Humana Festival of New American Plays

The Humana Foundation's 33-year sponsorship of Actors Theatre of Louisville and the Humana Festival of New American Plays represents the longest partnership between a corporation and a performing arts organization in the United States.

Three Humana Festival plays have won Pulitzer Prizes, six have won the American Theatre Critics Award, and four have won the Obie Award. It is no surprise that this event is often referred to as the preeminent new play festival in the country.

Contributions to Education Improvement

Every 1 Reads

The Foundation supports Every 1 Reads, a community-wide effort to have every child in Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Ky., reading at or above grade level. Since 2003, the number of novice readers overall has been reduced from 19 percent to 8.5 percent. This reduction translates to more than 10,000 students with improved reading scores and skills.

Business Higher Education Forum (BHEF)

The Foundation supports the BHEF's College Readiness Initiative (CRI): An Agenda for Educational Success. This initiative addresses the challenge of increasing educational attainment rates for students in the Louisville, Ky., region by promoting college readiness, access, and work/life success. Through this work, CRI hopes to develop a model for education reform efforts in other communities.
