Humana HEALThE School
HEALThE stands for Healthy Environment & Active Lifestyles Through Education. With this initiative, Humana and The Humana Foundation have joined forces to help Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Ky., develop two healthy elementary schools and to answer the question: "What does it take to make kids healthy?"
About the Initiative
The pilot schools will use incentives and rewards to trigger change toward better health.
The schools will:
- Teach – healthy physical, social, emotional, and mental behaviors
- Promote – increased activity and fitness
- Incorporate – healthy foods in the cafeterias
- Integrate – health into the curriculum
- Identify – ways for children to influence parents
Program Goals
Ultimately, The Humana Foundation and Jefferson County Public Schools hope to demonstrate that children who attend these schools – and their families – are healthier and that a healthy school environment has a positive effect on students' academic achieveĀment. If successful, Humana hopes to apply lessons learned from the Louisville pilot to develop a model for a HEALThE School Certification that can be inĀcorporated into other schools across the country.
We look forward to sharing updates about the HEALThE School project as we continue to develop the model.
